THE CYCLING EXPERIENCE
The Hawke’s Bay Cycle Trail runs practically past the front gate — one of New Zealand’s official Nga Haerenga Great Rides, taking you through vineyards, orchards, river country, and some of the most beautiful countryside in the North Island.
Lawn Road Retreat sits at the heart of the trail network, making it the natural base for a cycling group. Head out from the property in the morning, explore as far as you like, and come back to one of the most comfortable bases you’ll find anywhere on the trail.
The property has everything you need after a long day in the saddle — a 14-seat hot tub, saltwater pool, two kitchens, and eight ensuite bedrooms. Groups come to ride. They come back because the base is that good.

The trail network covers over 200km of routes through the region — you can ride a single loop in a day, or string sections together over two or three days to explore further afield. The terrain is accessible enough for most fitness levels, with options ranging from flat river paths to more challenging hill sections.
Some of Hawke’s Bay’s best wineries sit directly on the trail — Black Barn, Craggy Range, Elephant Hill, and Clearview Estate are all easily reached by bike. A cycling day and a wine day are, it turns out, not mutually exclusive.

Day loops
Ride out from the gate and back. Single-day loops through vineyards and river country, sized to your group — an easy morning spin or a full day in the saddle.
Multi-day sections
String trail sections together over two or three days to explore further afield, returning to the same comfortable base each evening.
Wine & ride
Black Barn, Craggy Range, Elephant Hill, Askerne and Clearview all sit on the trail. Pedal between cellar doors and let someone else collect the bikes.
Mixed ability
Flat river paths for cruisers, hill sections for the keen. The trail suits e-bikes and road bikes alike, so no one gets left behind.

“Our family of 18 ( ranging from 4 months to 70s ) stayed for a week recently. It was every thing and more than we expected. Bedrooms were generous and numerous ( 9 with en-suites) and many lounges and places to chill out. Fantastic outdoor areas with seating for large numbers. The outdoor activities were amazing, everything you could think of was available to our family and the children made the most of an extensive playground. The pool and hot tub area was enjoyed by everyone. Because of the facilities being so amazing we only left the property to go on the numerous bike trails 5minutes from the house and the occasional game of golf .
